Belgium Announces €1 Billion Aid to Ukraine, Pledges Ongoing Support During De Wever’s Term
In a significant show of support for Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict with Russia, Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever announced a landmark €1 billion ($1.10 billion) bilateral aid package during a joint press conference in Kyiv with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The funds are earmarked for delivery in 2025 and represent Belgium’s largest single-year commitment to Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale war in 2022.
De Wever emphasized Belgium’s long-term commitment to Ukraine's defense and recovery, stating that his government intends to maintain or increase this level of support annually throughout his term. “Our support for Ukraine is not temporary or symbolic—it is strategic and sustained. As long as Ukraine fights for its freedom and our shared democratic values, Belgium will stand beside it,” De Wever said.
The €1 billion package is expected to be a combination of military aid, humanitarian assistance, and reconstruction funding. Belgian officials noted that a portion of the funding will go toward mine clearance, medical supplies, energy infrastructure repairs, and support for Ukrainian refugees.
De Wever's visit marks one of his first major foreign policy moves since assuming office, signaling a strong alignment with EU and NATO strategies on Ukraine. The announcement comes at a time when international attention is increasingly focused on long-term support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, economic recovery, and integration into Western institutions.
This pledge adds Belgium to the growing list of European nations making long-term aid commitments to Kyiv, as the war enters its third year with no definitive end in sight.
