Former Mali PM Maiga Arrested in Escalating Political Crackdown
On August 12, 2025, Choguel Kokalla Maiga, Mali’s former prime minister, was taken into custody by the National Economic and Financial Unit amid a widening corruption probe. Maiga, who was dismissed in November 2024 for criticizing the military junta’s postponement of elections, remains a prominent critic. His arrest follows the imprisonment of another ex-PM, Moussa Mara, suggesting intensifying suppression of dissent under the junta that has postponed civilian rule and extended Gen. Assimi Goita’s term.
