Hamas to Release Edan Alexander, Last American Hostage in Gaza, After Mediation by Qatar and Egypt
Hamas has announced plans to release Edan Alexander, a 21-year-old Israeli-American soldier and the last known living American hostage held in Gaza. This decision follows negotiations involving the United States, Egypt, and Qatar, and coincides with President Donald Trump's upcoming visit to the Middle East.
Alexander, who was abducted during Hamas's October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, has been in captivity for over 19 months. His release is viewed as a goodwill gesture by Hamas, potentially aimed at facilitating broader ceasefire discussions and improving humanitarian conditions in Gaza.
President Trump expressed gratitude to all parties involved in the negotiations, highlighting the roles of Qatar and Egypt in mediating the release. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed the establishment of a safe corridor for Alexander's return but emphasized that this does not signify a broader ceasefire, as military operations in Gaza continue.
The release of Alexander may serve as a catalyst for renewed diplomatic efforts to address the ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Currently, 58 hostages remain in Gaza, with fewer than 24 believed to be alive.
