North Korean leader Kim Jong Un supervises test of new antiair missiles

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the test-firing of two types of new antiair missiles. According to state media, these weapons are designed to counter aerial threats like drones and cruise missiles. Kim tasked defense scientists with unspecified “important” missions ahead of a major political conference expected early next year. The test occurred during joint military drills by South Korea and the U.S., coinciding with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung’s visit to Tokyo and impending summit in Washington. North Korea continues to reject calls from the U.S. and South Korea to resume nuclear negotiations and has increased its alignment with Russia—sending troops and arms to support its war in Ukraine.
