Palm Sunday Tragedy in Sumy: Russian Missiles Kill Dozens in City Center

On Palm Sunday, April 13, 2025, a devastating Russian missile strike targeted the city center of Sumy, Ukraine, resulting in at least 31 fatalities and injuring over 80 individuals, including children. The attack occurred around 10:15 a.m., striking a crowded area during religious celebrations. Among the casualties were two children, and the injured included ten children.

The missiles hit civilian infrastructure, including a trolleybus and the city's human rights center, leading to significant destruction and fires.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strike as deliberate terror and called for a stronger international response.

This attack follows a similar incident in Kryvyi Rih just over a week prior, which killed around 20 people, including nine children.
The Sumy strike occurred amid ongoing peace talks and a proposed 30-day pause in fighting, highlighting the challenges in achieving a ceasefire.

Sumy, located near the Russian border, holds strategic military importance. However, the missiles specifically struck civilian areas during a religious observance, further emphasizing the humanitarian toll of the conflict.
