Russia’s Expanded Territorial Claims and Germany’s Bid for Geneva Ceasefire Talks
A troubling visual emerged this week: during a Russian military briefing, a map displayed by General Valery Gerasimov and the Ministry of Defense now includes Mykolaiv and Odesa among Russian-claimed territories. Previously, only Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson were shown. The addition of two more coastal regions signals a potential escalation in Russia’s ambitions along the Black Sea—despite lack of actual control on the ground.
Meanwhile, Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz proposed Geneva as the venue for a forthcoming Ukraine–Russia ceasefire summit, to be attended by around 30 nations under the “Coalition of the Willing.” The virtual France-led summit aims to shape long-term security guarantees, deterrence frameworks, and stability mechanisms for post-war Ukraine.
Russia, however, continues its military campaign, increasing missile and drone strikes across Ukraine in defiance of peace deadlines set by the United States. These intensified attacks, coupled with growing support for post-conflict frameworks, underscore the widening geopolitical divide.
