Russia’s July 31 Missile Barrage Kills Six in Kyiv as Kremlin Escalates Pressure Across Ukraine

In the early hours of July 31, Russia unleashed one of its most extensive missile and drone assaults on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, killing at least six civilians—including a 6-year-old boy—and injuring more than 50 others. The overnight barrage struck 27 separate locations, targeting residential neighborhoods, schools, and even a children’s hospital. Emergency services are still combing through rubble, with search-and-rescue operations ongoing.

The attack marks a sharp escalation in Moscow’s campaign against civilian infrastructure, drawing widespread international condemnation. Analysts view the strike as part of a broader strategy to demoralize Ukraine’s population and strain its emergency response systems.

Simultaneously, the Kremlin claimed it had seized full control of Chasiv Yar, a strategically important town in Donetsk. While Russian state media declared victory, Ukrainian officials and independent observers say fighting continues, suggesting the situation on the ground remains fluid.

On the diplomatic front, Russia dismissed recent U.S. sanctions threats, claiming “immunity” to further economic pressure. Former President Trump had issued a 10-day ultimatum for a peace breakthrough by August 8, warning of harsher tariffs. Moscow, however, appears undeterred.
