Trump Vows More Defensive Weapons for Ukraine After Drones Attack

In the wake of a massive Russian drone barrage on Ukrainian cities, former President Donald Trump, now the Republican presidential nominee, pledged to significantly increase military support for Kyiv if re-elected. Speaking at a campaign rally in Ohio, Trump condemned the recent escalation of attacks and committed to sending advanced U.S. defensive systems — notably Patriot missile batteries — to bolster Ukraine’s air defense.

The announcement came hours after over 70 Iranian-made Shahed drones targeted civilian infrastructure across multiple regions of Ukraine, leaving several dead and dozens injured. Ukrainian officials stressed the urgent need for more Western air defense capabilities to protect critical infrastructure and urban populations.

Trump’s remarks marked a notable shift from his earlier ambiguous stance on Ukraine. While he has often criticized "endless wars" and questioned U.S. military spending abroad, his latest pledge suggests a more hawkish position on Russian aggression.

“We will not let innocent people be slaughtered by a dictator,” Trump said. “If Joe Biden won’t stop the attacks, I will — and I’ll do it with American strength, American technology, and American resolve.”

The promised delivery of additional Patriot missile systems — highly advanced U.S. anti-aircraft and missile defense systems — would represent a substantial upgrade for Ukraine's defensive network. Kyiv currently operates a limited number of these systems, which have proven crucial in intercepting both drones and ballistic missiles.

Trump’s statement drew swift reactions from both allies and critics. Some Republican lawmakers welcomed the pledge, calling it a necessary response to escalating violence. Others, including members of Trump’s own MAGA base, expressed concerns over deeper U.S. involvement in the conflict.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked Trump for his "strong and clear signal of support," while urging that deliveries be expedited given the frequency of Russian strikes.

As the U.S. election approaches, Ukraine’s future military aid is increasingly becoming a focal point of American foreign policy debates — with Trump now positioning himself as a defender of Ukraine’s skies.
