UK Evacuates Citizens Amid Rising Tensions with Iran, Clarifies Non-Involvement in Strikes
UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy confirmed that a Royal Air Force (RAF) evacuation flight successfully airlifted 63 British nationals from Israel to Cyprus on June 23, amid escalating regional tensions following recent strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities.
Speaking to reporters, Lammy emphasized that the UK's actions are precautionary and humanitarian in nature. “Our foremost priority is the safety of British citizens,” he said. The evacuation follows heightened fears of conflict after a coordinated US–Israeli operation reportedly targeted Iranian nuclear infrastructure last week.
In response to the crisis, the UK has temporarily closed its embassy in Tehran and increased both diplomatic and military readiness across the region. However, Lammy made clear that Britain was not involved in the strikes. “We were not part of the recent military actions against Iran. Our approach remains rooted in diplomacy and de-escalation,” he stated.
The UK’s move to distance itself from the attacks comes amid calls for restraint from European and regional leaders, who fear further escalation could spiral into broader conflict across the Middle East.
British citizens in the region have been advised to remain vigilant and follow guidance from local authorities and the Foreign Office.
