Zelenskyy Rebukes U.S. Envoy Over Russian Narrative at Paris Talks

During a high-stakes round of international discussions held in Paris, tensions flared when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy publicly criticized remarks made by U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff. Witkoff had suggested that a potential pathway to peace in Ukraine might include negotiations over territorial concessions—a statement that Zelenskyy condemned as echoing Russian propaganda. “Ukraine will not trade sovereignty for silence,” Zelenskyy said during a press conference, reaffirming Kyiv’s unwavering stance on the integrity of its borders.

The comments drew sharp reactions from both Ukrainian and European diplomats, many of whom viewed the suggestion as undermining the principle of territorial integrity enshrined in international law. While Witkoff later clarified that his remarks were exploratory and not reflective of official U.S. policy, the incident exposed underlying tensions within the Western alliance over the long-term strategy for resolving the war.

Despite the diplomatic friction, Western officials sought to present a united front, describing the Paris talks as “constructive” and emphasizing continued collaboration. A joint statement released by French and German representatives stressed the importance of unity in support of Ukraine while acknowledging the complexity of achieving a sustainable peace. Plans were confirmed for a follow-up summit in London next month, where officials are expected to revisit the framework for a post-conflict settlement and address broader security concerns in the region.
